Lesson 5 – Lung cancer
Lung cancer occurs when malignant cells originate in the lung.
Evidence of asbestosis is not necessary to attribute lung cancer to asbestos exposure. That being said, there is a noticeable increase in the incidence of lung cancer among asbestos workers.
Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer; however, when coupled with asbestos exposure the risk of lung cancer is significantly increased.
Lung cancer does not generally occur until several years after initial asbestos exposure. This is usually, but not always, anywhere between 20 and 30 years after exposure.
It is estimated, however, that 3%-8% of all lung cancers are asbestos-related. The risk of developing lung cancer depends on the level, duration, and frequency of asbestos exposure.
It is what is termed cumulative.
